Haverstraw Structure Fire October 15 2009
October 15 2009: At 0050 hrs. Haverstraw New York firefighters were dispatched to a structure fire at 51 Broad Street in the Village. Elements of the Haverstraw Fire Department under the Command of Chief Peter Rugg, along with a F.A.S.T. team from the West Haverstraw Fire Department responded to a vacant multi-family dwelling with heavy fire showing from the third floor. The Congers Fire Department were dispatched to stand by at 4-100. No injuries were reported at the scene.
Haverstraw Fire Chief Peter Rugg said there was evidence that unauthorized people had been living in the two-family house. When firefighters arrived, the attic was fully engulfed, with flames coming out the windows, he said. Firefighters were worried that the blaze would spread to the home next door, which they sprayed with water. The adjoining home was not damaged. Using a 2 1/2-inch hose line, firefighters advanced up the main stairs to fight the fire. “We held the fire to the attic,” Rugg said.

Sixty firefighters from the Haverstraw New York fire department battled an early morning blaze at a used-car dealership on Route 9W that sent three firefighters to the hospital.
Smoke was billowing out of the two-story building while the fire in the rear was steadily getting out of control. Rugg said he asked for mutual aid from the West Haverstraw and Congers fire departments, both of which were on standby. Firefighters worked aggressively to keep the fire from spreading , first breaking through the ceiling and roof to ventilate it and allow the fire to escape.
